For the first time, Eva’s Finance team stepped directly into programming by delivering a youth-focused tax clinic this spring—empowering 21 young people with practical, personalized financial guidance.

The Finance team provided one-on-one support to youth residents, walking them through the often-intimidating process of filing their taxes. The clinic aimed to demystify a crucial life task, while reinforcing a deeper understanding of financial responsibility.

“Filing taxes can feel overwhelming, especially if you’ve never done it before.  It is helpful to have someone walk you through what paperwork is needed, benefits you can receive from the government, and how to get bigger refunds in the future,” said Michelle Wagner, CPA and Chief Financial Advisor at Eva’s. “Our goal was to make the process more accessible, less stressful, and to show youth that managing finances is something they can absolutely learn and do.”

As part of Eva’s life skills programming, the clinic explored foundational topics like what taxes are, why we file them, and how taxes help support services and infrastructure in society. Wagner emphasized that understanding taxes is more than just paperwork—it’s part of growing into independent adulthood.

“Learning how to manage your money, including how to file your taxes, is a key part of building stability,” she said. “We want to give young people tools that will serve them well into the future.”

The tax clinic marked the launch of a new series of financial literacy workshops hosted by the Finance team. Over the coming months, youth will have the chance to explore topics such as understanding credit scores, opening and managing a bank account, and building a realistic savings plan.

“By using the expertise already within Eva’s administrative team, we’re creating a safe and supportive way for young people to learn essential financial skills,” said Bashar Sa’deh, MAccFin, Director of Finance at Eva’s.  “It’s been inspiring to see their confidence grow as they realize they’re capable of taking control of their own finances.”

This initiative is just one more way Eva’s is helping young people build brighter, more independent futures. Thank you to Michelle, Bashar, Ayesha, and Anna for making this important opportunity come to life.
