What is the Walk for Homeless Youth? (#WHY)

Eva’s Walk for Homeless Youth (WHY) is an annual awareness and fundraising event that provides youth in grades 6 to 10 with an opportunity help their peers experiencing homelessness. It challenges students to put themselves “in the shoes” of someone experiencing homelessness to get a small sense of what it feels to be cold, tired, and a little bit hungry. WHY helps young people build empathy and understanding for their peers who don’t have a place to call home. That is key to building a future without youth homelessness!

There are at least 10,000 homeless youth in Toronto every year and as many as 2,000 on any given night. Funds raised through WHY goes to shelter, food, and caring support at Eva’s.

WHY is a challenge that leads students down an inspiring path laid by incredible Toronto community leaders. It was founded in memory of Floyd Honey, a tireless humanitarian, social justice advocate, and supporter of Eva’s. It upholds the spirit of Eva Smith, visionary founder of Eva’s, and it continues through the support of many dedicated volunteers. In 2017, 500 students participated in WHY and raised over $20,000.
